Summer is our favorite time to go hiking! But hiking in summer often means we’re battling the heat and sweating wherever we go. Below, we’ve listed our favorite summer hiking gear we love to use, and think you should use too!

Tops:
- REI Sahara Sun Hoodie – the softest and most breathable sun hoodie (and right now they’re on sale!) They have men’s and women’s available on REI.
- LL Bean Anorak – I love my anorak for a lightweight rain option during the summer!
- REI Sahara T-shirt – Just like the sun hoodie, lightweight and moisture-wicking, these are the best t-shirts for hiking this summer!
- Merino T-Shirt – not only is Merino great for baselayers, but also for a super comfy hiking shirt!
Bottoms:
- Danner Mountain 600 hiking boots – my favorite hiking boots. They are more expensive, but the comfort and stability are unmatched! If you are looking for a cheaper option, look at the boots I have linked below!
- Columbia Newton Ridge Hiking boot – A cheaper alternative to the Danner boots, these a great for beginners! If you are just getting into hiking, these are the perfect ones for you!
- Anacapa hiking boots
- Target All-In-Motion Flex Shorts – my favorite flex shorts are no longer sold, but these are a similar style. Flexible, moisture-wicking with pockets, you can’t go wrong with these! They are affordable and come in a variety of colors.
- MTN OPS Men’s Prime Shorts – These are Grant’s favorite shorts for hiking! They are smell-resistant, flexible, and moisture-wicking, letting you go further!
- Branwyn Merino Bras & Underwear – Made with Merino Wool, these bralettes and underwear are seriously the most comfy you will ever wear! I wore mine for a week straight while hiking and backpacking, and at the end of the week, they didn’t smell!
- Athleta Elation Jogger – These are THE best hiking pants I’ve ever owned. Not technically hiking pants, but moisture-wicking, comfy with good pockets, you seriously can’t go wrong. I wear these all the time, even when I’m not hiking!
- Chacos – I live in my Chacos in the summer, and the year-round tan lines will tell you that! Grippy soles, perfect for dry weather or rain, they are the unbeatable summer shoe of choice. The Z clouds are my top choice for ultimate comfort.
Gear:
- REI trail 25 backpack – Perfect for a day hike or lighter trip, this 25L pack is the comfiest one I’ve tried!
- Osprey water bladder – For longer hikes, this hydration bladder is the best. Easy to clean, and holds 3L of water so you never run out.
- Hardside hydration – For easy filtered hydration on the go, this is the optimal choice!
- Nalgene water bottle – perfect for the Hardside Hydration, this water bottle makes it easy to carry a lot of water if you don’t want to use a bladder.
- Garmin watch – Grant absolutely loves his, and we don’t go hiking without one!
- Sun hat – Whether it’s a wide-brimmed hat or a ball cap, we love wearing good sun hats to shade our faces for our hiking trips!
- Merino hiking socks – the only kind of socks you can wear while hiking in the summertime! They keep you dry no matter the miles you’re putting in!
- Kula Cloth – only women know now how important this piece of equipment is! Don’t go hiking without one!
- Think sport Sunblock – 50 SPF, so you know you’re always covered from the sun!
- Ergo Baby Omni Deluxe Carrier – Perfect for those hot days with your kiddo, this carrier is breathable and features pockets for your phone and small items!
- Medical Kit – Essential for hiking, so you have exactly what you need in case of an emergency!
- Murphy’s Naturals Bug Spray – A good, all-natural bug spray. It repels both bugs and ticks, a very important thing on the East Coast!
